A doodle a day – Day Twenty One

Day Twenty One Exploring typography At the half way point of this 30 day trial I mentioned that I wanted to explore typography a little more and see how it can be used in design. I had recently commented on a friends recent break up and mentioned (being the technical guy that I am) that 'If love was an algorithm it would be f&*%!?g complicated'. A little rude I know but hey, it was needed for the impact. It was then that I thought that this would...

Day Twenty Hardcore fish Is it a fish? Is it a shark? Or is it something I drew quickly because it's Sunday?  Yes. Maybe. But more importantly, despite the sketchiness of the drawing, I think it ended up looking like a pretty good concept for an illustration, perhaps a story book or a video. That's what I love about these doodles. I start with little to no idea and then somehow a character will emerge with distinctive characteristics which give the whole design a personality. Take this shark...

Day Nineteen Black and white orca For today's doodle I created a black and white patterned Orca whale. As Orcas' are predominantly black and white anyway, I saw it fitting to try and create a stylised version of one, like some of the carvings you may see in North America and around the world. I started off with my usual brief sketch which I scanned in to the computer (whoop! Scanner now working again) and then created the black outlines before finally filling in the white. I did...

Day Eighteen Playing with textures Today was  a different type of doodle day. I started playing around with some textures, as combining multiple textures together and using them to come up with varying patterns and styles is something I have been meaning to do for a while. First off I decided that I would create two single patterns and then combine them to make a third. I started by creating a simple blue gradient background and then applied a new fill to the same object on to which...

Day Seventeen Armoured body parts I found a little time this morning to just doodle a couple of armoured body parts. To try something a little different, I wanted to get to grips with the basic outline of armour. You can see there is not much detail here in the way of shading and depth but an overall feeling that the pieces offer toughness and protection against some sort of fire power. The pieces started off the same way I usually do with a basic stickman armature to get...

Day Sixteen Avian Fury - Background and logo design If you read my halfway point summary yesterday you would have seen that one of the items that I wanted to develop was creating backgrounds and scenes. So today I set out to try and create a pretty typical summer-like background with green hills and blue sky. For inspiration I took a look at a few mobile game backgrounds as they can be both pretty simple and detailed and they fall within my own design style. Needless to...

We are on day fifteen of 'A doodle a day for 30 days' - and phew what a journey! But it's not over yet, so I'm just going to sum up what I have learnt so far and mention what might be in store in the next fifteen days. The last fifteen days If you have been a regular reader of my blog over the last few weeks you would have noticed that fifteen days ago I set out to try and explore some new techniques and...

Day Fifteen Aboriginal style art As we enter halfway through this 30 day trial of producing a new doodle a day I will be posting another post a little later on today to sum up my trial experience so far, but for now here is today's doodle. Today's doodle I have to admit was a little rushed. I put together a quick concept on paper and transferred it to the computer so I could replicate it. I wasn't sure where I was going with this all I knew...

Day Thirteen Introducing Blu, A horny fellow... I wanted to try and explore a little more emotion in my characters as well as adding a new dimension by adding a little more depth. I was randomly playing around with an old sketch I made way back and thought that because of his simple body shape it would be a great piece to trial some ideas. I started out  how I usually do, by creating the bold black outline and main features, then selected a colour which was bold...
